In order to qualify you must finish in the top 10% of a BE 90 or 20% of a BE 100 for a place in the regional finals which are held in the Autumn. For British Eventing competitions at the National level, course lengths will range from 1600–4000m and there will be between 18–40 jumps, with the exact amount depending on the level of competition.
International horse trials are given a star grading according to their level of difficulty. The higher the grade, or number of stars, the more complex and physically demanding the competition becomes. Badminton is a 5 star event, the highest grade and one of only 6 such events in the world.
